Roddy Doyle

For their weekend challenge this time, Trifecta wants 33 words by someone that we like to read (our favorite book quotes, as it were).  I was going to go with the quote from “To Kill a Mockingbird”, towards the end, where Sheriff Tate declares that he may not be much, but he’s still the sheriff of this county, and Bob Ewell fell on his knife.  But all of you know that book, so I’m going to use this as a vehicle to make people think of an author who deserves to be more popular, the great Irish author, Roddy Doyle (semi-famous for being the author of the book which the movie “The Commitments” was based on).  From his book “The Woman Who Walked Into Doors”, we have:

“I was a dirty slut in some way that I didn’t understand and couldn’t control; I made men and boys do things.  I used to smell myself to see if it was that,…”

I love book quotes and I don’t think I’ve ever counted to 33 more times in one weekend in my life.  It’s blizzarding off and on here, but no 3 feet of snow like parts of New England got.  Have a nice weekend and week, y’all.

  1. Good choice to choose Roddy Doyle. I used to use Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha in an adult class. It went really well.

    • Perhaps he’s wealthy from book sales and from having several books turned into movies, but I’ve spent a grand total of 3 U.S. dollars on two of his books “The Woman….” and “The Deportees”, one at a bargain bin of a chain store and the other at a “dollar store.” So I think the word needs to get out on him a bit more. Thanks for reading.

Roddy Doyle seems to be an awesome writer :) I will definitely try to get hold of some of his works :)

another book for my must read list. thanks (and, about the counting to 33 . . . um, yeah! not easy was it?)

Sounds like a great read. I’ll have to check it out!

  6. Anna says:

That’s such an excellent quote, there’s something so powerful and liberating about sexual realisation.

    • Yeah, if only I could figure it out. I know I like women, just don’t know where to look. Highway abduction is out, because I’m too lazy but mostly I just think it’d be terrible manners, you know. Hee hee.

  7. “The Woman Who Walked Into Doors” is such a fabulous title. The title makes me want to read it. Does she hurt herself? Is she okay? What’s wrong with her?

  8. I never liked Roddy Doyle much, he seemed a bit pretentious. But that’s ages ago – maybe I should have another go!

    • He may be a bit pretentious, you know, but I think he does some interesting stuff too. I like giving book reports but I don’t really like telling people “you should read this”, because I can’t really think of too many books I’ve ever gotten as gifts that I liked all that much. But they asked for quotes, so I thought “why not?” (It’s sort of like telling people “You should like this music, that music sucks–that doesn’t usually work does it?–though I intend to do that a lot with my daughter in the vain hope that she won’t subject me to too much crap as she gets older.)
